In Kimber we can trust!

Last Christmas I recieved another great bonus. Part of my bonus was the Kimber Custom II pictured above. I have for years been reluctant to purchase a full sized 45ACP on my own because of the high price tag on the gun itself along with the ammunition. I have also had gun nuts tell me that the 45 is such a slow round that just about anybody would be better off with a 9mm or 40. Depending on the load configuration the 45acp will usually fire between 800 and 1000 fps. A 9mm will fire at 1000 to 1400 fps, again depending on the configuration of the cartridge.
One of those same gun nuts who happens to work at the gun counter at Cabelas told me a man can be shot several times with a 9mm and shake it off. I don’t think so! Anyways it is important to mention why Brother John M Browning (a mormon) invented the gun in the first place. During the late 1800’s the US Army was in the Philippines fighting the pesky Moros. (The same people who are responsible for the Islamic Insurgency in the Philippines today) The Calvary would ride into their strong holds on horseback armed with 38 caliber pistols. It did not take long for the Army to realize the 38 did not have the knock down power necessary to efficently neutralize the threat of these little guys with big knives. Note: The 38 back then would shoot between 900 and 1100 fps, Very compariable to the 9mm.
Long story short folks, 1\2 Mass times Velocity squared tells you all you need to know. The 45 with the right ammo with give you almost double the kenetic energy compaired to other rounds.

How are you doing Elder Allen!
It’s Elder Bennett, from your mission. I found your blog on Cam’s site and decided to give it a read.
First of all, thanks for the opportunity to read (after agreeing to my inferiority) and comment on your blog. I happened upon this and couldn’t help but open my big mouth… (I am fat now so it’s pretty big). I dont know if you know, but I am now a 4th year medical student in Washington DC. I was on the red trauma team at a trauma-one hospital in the city with one of, if not the highest rate of gun violence in the country. I will tell you what I learned from seeing 87 gunshot wounds (GSW’s) in one month. I totally agree with you about most of what your saying (I am not anti gun, but I dont like the shooting of shooting folks any more than the next guy). I did acknowledge in the opener that you are better than I am, so I will stay with that mantra as I comment.
Whoever told you about the 9mm is pretty much right…kinda. “shake it off” is a little light, but they will usually live. Unless you get shot in the head point-blank, it wont kill for sure. I saw patients shot multiple times in the chest, in the heart… as long as they got to us fast enough they made it. If you get shot in both lungs it will be about 5 min before you start the dying process. that doesn’t always happen.
I myself own a .40 custom glock. But unfortunatly 1\2 Mass times Velocity squared means that mass is less important than velocity. If you want to increase damage, you want to increase the velocity not the mass. Thus my .40 and your .45 do just a little more damage than a 9mm. The diameter is bigger, but they move slower, and because that value is squared, it has a HUGE impact. I saw this out time and time again, patients shot with a .45 did better than those shot with 9mm, AK47, 30-0-6, .23 (but not 22, they have low velocity and mass). it tore a bigger hole, but heck, one of the first things we do is dig a bigger hole in the persons chest to put in a chest tube so it doesn’t matter anyway. The moral of this is that my and your handguns don’t do much. The .357 is smaller than the .45 and ask anyone in law enforcement, it does more damage because of the high velocity produced by the large amount of gunpowder. In retrospect, I should have gone with a 357 instead of what I have now. Desert eagles fire a .357-like .50 caliber round that has allot of velocity too (that is my dream gun…) that’s a bit like a slug.
The above is why if you get shot with an AK47 or any gun that shoots a standardized nato round, although they fire only a tiny bit of lead… (Ak shoots a .23… only slightly more mass than a .22) they will do WAY more damage cause most of the round is gunpowder and that translates to velocity. I never saw anyone live shot anywhere in the torso or head with a AK, hunting rife or similar high-velocity round.
The benefit of high mass is personified by the shotgun.. this is probably the best gun for home protection if you have a short barrel. There is a rapid deceleration and high mass (lots of pellets) . People dont do well when they are shot anywhere at close range with such a gun.
The commonness of the misunderstanding of the caliber-stopping power relationship is exemplified by numerous video games that seem to think that .22<.357<.40<.45<.50 but they get it right with the power of shotguns and sniper rifles that usually kill someone with one shot. They constantly under-power the AK47’s and other machine guns though. But I would rather take 2 shots from any hand gun with any caliber round than one shot from an AK47 or anything that shoots a high-velocity round.
I guess the moral of what I am saying is that .357 and .50 are the handguns that have the most stopping power, not the .45 and the .40 you and I have. My next gun is a Desert Eagle for that reason. I confirmed this with one of my cousins in the FBI who has a masters in mathematics (we had a similar conversation a while back). The consensus between his experience with firearms and my experience fixing folks was pretty much for .357 and .50 as most tough handgun rounds.
Your thoughts?

I don’t know what 9mm round those patients was getting hit with, but my H & K 9mm shoots over 1200 f/s and most .45 shoot 900 f/s. Given the formula that you used a .45 may weigh more but has a smaller speed; given that the speed is squared then speed is a lot bigger compenent than weight. Now, with all of that energy it is possible that it will go straight threw a person, which leads to the person not absorbing all of the energy. Where a .45 with less enery can stay in the body and the total energy, even if it is less than the 9mm, can be absorbed by the body.
So, here’s the point part of my rant. If you want to defend yourself 9mm is the best chioice, but if you want to ruin someone’s day then go with your .45.
